( 06-04-2.003) – (ETCC - Barcelona)

Touring Car debut with a podium and fastest lap |
|
Moving from single-seaters to touring cars, starting in a major team alongside the most successful driver of this speciality, Giovanardi, and to finish the first race on the podium, after fighting with another touring car legend, Tarquini, is more than any young driver could hope for on his first venture into the FIA European Touring Car Championship.
Antonio’s times during pre-season testing had already suggested that he would make a good transition to the category, the car and the team. In the free practice sessions before Sunday’s races, he was always among the best, but he had to wait for the moment of truth – and when that moment came, the surprise was more than pleasant !
In qualifying, he was fifth, the second BMW and only 4 hundreds of a second behind Giovanardi. All good so far, but he still had to take his first start – which was perfect, pulling ahead of two of the Alfa cars to third place, following Tarquini and Giovanardi. The trio started to pull away from the rest of the pack, staying close together until the end of the race, when Giovanardi started to push Tarquini, and Garcia increased the margin by a few metres to ease the pressure on his team-mate.
"I am certainly very satisfied, as in both the timed sessions and the race I think I was up to the occasion, and although I know I still have a lot to learn, I think I will have a good season, and be able to help the team to succeed.
I especially liked being able to measure myself against the two most prestigious drivers of the Championship. To be third behind them is quite an honour for a beginner, and because of that I was not worried about getting further ahead – and also because it was the first race and I didn’t want to damage the car - and also because the man in front of me was my team-mate.”
In the second race, things also went as expected, due to the Championship rules, which mean that the first eight cars start in inversed positions and also because some drivers had kept new tyres for this second race.
His start was good on this occasion too, but Giovanardi got ahead on the outside, and he let him go, leaving himself at the mercy of Larini. Antonio put up a certain amount of resistance, but without taking any risks. Finishing behind Tarquini, Giovanardi and Larini, three major names from touring car racing, Antonio hopes to give a good account of himself in the forthcoming races.
"The second race was closer to what I had expected to meet in the Championship. At the start I had to let Giovanardi by, and Larini took advantage of this, pushing me hard and teaching me something of the ways of racing here.
Then I saw Coronel braking, and I found Tarquini behind me, whom I could not contain. I overtook Coronel, and closed on Giovanardi, who was fighting with the two Alfas, and, just like in the first race, I preferred to wait for events to happen rather than fill up his rear-view mirrors.
The first race is over, and the balance is positive. I did not want to take any risks, and was satisfied to be in Giovanardi’s shadow. As I begin to get the feel of the Championship, I think that I will be able to give the team more satisfaction."
