Antonio García por fin en el podium

Se concretó la progresión manifestada en los test con la consecución del primer podium y además de una forma totalmente contundente pues durante todo el fin de semana Antonio García demostró que a partir de esta carrera, se tendrá que contar con él para repartir los puestos de cajón.

Ya en la tanda libre del Viernes los tiempos salían con regularidad entre los tres primeros y la pena es que faltó algo para situase mejor en la parrilla pues los tiempos eran posibles, pero en ambas tandar surgieron problemas que impidieron mejorar.

En la primera fue un vibración que le hacía perder la visión y en la segunda el pinchazo de una de sus ruedas traseras, no obstante saldó su participación en los cronos con un quinto y un cuarto puesto, con escasas diferencias con la cabeza y mezclado entre los líderes del campeonato.

En la primera carrera, una mala salida de Wilson le dejó clavado y permitió que Cochet les superase a ambos, mientras se adelantaban Zonta y Leinders, sin que Montagny consiguiera seguirles. Tanto Wilson como Antonio superaron a Cochet y alcanzaron fácilmente a Montagny pero Wilson rechazó el superar a su compañero de equipo y limitó su carrera a evitar que Antonio le superase, terminando los tres la carrera en menos de un segundo.

En la segunda carrera un cambio de estrategia a ultima hora tal vez fue la causa de no haber accedido a lo mas alto de podium. Se había planeado hacer el pit spot al principio pero la amenaza de lluvia lo desaconsejó y de esta forma se inició la carrera con nuevo tapón de Wilson con otra mala salida y Leinders que se les adelantaba a ambos. Wilson, presionado se salió ligeramente y en su retorno se llevó por delante a Leinders, salvandose Antonio por poco y situándose tercero con un hueco importante con la cabeza.

Marcádo vuelta rápida alcanzó a Zonta y Montagny, pero no tenía muchas posibilidades de revasarlos pues no conseguía llegar lo suficientemente cerca en Adelaila. Los tres hicieron el pit stop al final en el que Montagny fue dos segundos mas rápido de Zonta y cuatro mas que Antonio con lo que retornó a pista ya sin opciones a atacar y se dejó llevar hasta la meta asegurando su primer podium de la temporada

"Estoy satisfecho por el trabajo realizado pero me sabe a poco el tercer escalón de cajón. Teníamos pensado parar al inicio para coger pista libre gastando algun comodín. Estábamos convencidos del resultado pues nuestros tiempos eran buenos y tan solo necesitábamos esto rodar libres de lucha para adquirir ventaja, pero justo a ir a la parrilla se situó una nube negra sobre la pista y era muy arriesgado que comenzase a llover por detras de nuestro pit stop y tomamos la táctica mas segura.

En la primera parte de la carrera era el piloto mas rápido, pero no podía atacar pues perdía terreno entre la recta y la frenada de Adelaila, a la que llegaba lejos. En otro punto, en esta pista, solo se puede adelantar por error del de delante y nadie lo cometió.

Así llegamos a pit stop y, todo y que nosotros hicimos un buen cambio, ellos lo hiceron mejor y, con solo cinco vueltas y viendo que no podía acercarme lo suficientemente rápido, me limité a concluir y rezar porque no se rompiese nada par poder por fin subir al cajón.

La progresión que hemos realizado en el último mes ha sido muy buena y ahora creo que estamos ya muy cerca del nivel de puesta a punto de los demás. A partir de esta carrara, tendrán que contar con nosotros y espero que en Barcelona pueda llegar mi primera victoria del año"

Antonio García on the podium at last !

The improvement shown during the test days was confirmed today with a first podium of the season, when Antonio Garcia proved that he was extremely competitive throughout the weekend. He showed that from this race onwards, he is someone that his rivals will have to contend with in the fight for places on the podium.
From Friday’s free practice onwards, his times were regularly among the top three, but unfortunately, he was not able to secure better places on the grid, because although the times were clearly possible, a number of problems meant that he was unable to improve sufficiently.

Suffering from vibrations in the first session, and a puncture in one of his rear tyres in the second, he came out of qualifying with a fifth and a fourth place on the grid, although his times were extremely close to those at the front of the grid and just behind the Championship leaders

In the first race, a bad exit from Wilson blocked him, and allowed Cochet to pass them both. In the meantime, Zonta and Leinders forged ahead, with Montagny attempting to catch up with them. First Wilson and then Antonio managed to pass Cochet, closing rapidly on Montagny. However, Wilson opted not to overtake his team-mate, and spent the rest of the race preventing Antonio from overtaking him, so that the three finished the race with less than a second separating them.

In the second race, a last-minute change of strategy was the only reason that Antonio did not finish higher on the podium. He had planned to pit early in the race, but the threat of rain changed meant that he opted to start the race on new tyres. Once more, Wilson had problems, going off slightly, and coming back onto the track just ahead of Leinders. Antonio avoided them, moving up to third place, but significantly behind the leaders.

With a succession of fast laps, he quickly caught Zonta and Montagny, but did not have many opportunities to overtake, as he was not able to follow them closely enough into the Adelaide hairpin. The three stopped simultaneously for their obligatory pit stop, during which Montagny was two seconds faster than Zonta and four seconds faster than Antonio, who returned to the track with no real opportunities to attack. He reduced his pace slightly, to make sure of his position, and therefore claimed his first podium finish of the season.

"I am really satisfied with the work we have done, but the third step of the podium is still relatively little. We had planned to stop early so as to have a free track ahead of us. We were convinced that we could get a good result because our times were good and the only thing we needed was to run in clean air to get the advantage. But just before we lined up on the grid, a large black cloud settled over the track and it looked very likely that it would start to rain after our pitstop, and so we chose the safer tactic.

In the first part of the race, I was the fastest driver on the track, but I could not attack, because I lost ground between the straight and the braking point for Adelaide, where they arrived long before me. Another point to be considered is that on this track, you can only move up the field thanks to errors from those ahead of you – and nobody made any mistakes.

Therefore, we got to the pit stop, and although we made a good stop, theirs were better and, with only five laps left, I could not get close enough to the leaders, so I limited myself to finishing the race, so as not to break anything and to guarantee a podium finish.

The progress we have made over the last month has been excellent, and I believe that we are now very close to the level of competition of the others. From this race onwards, they will have to contend with us, and I hope that Barcelona will see me take my first win of the year. “
